ISO 14001:2026 (4th edition) was published by ISO on 15 April 2026, replacing ISO 14001:2015, which has been withdrawn; existing 2015 certificates do not lapse immediately and have a transition period tied to the certification cycle.

According to the official ISO FAQ, the transition period for organizations certified to the 2015 version is usually about 3 years, tied to the surveillance or recertification audit; the Bureau of Accreditation (BoA) has issued a transition roadmap notice for certification bodies in Vietnam.

The task is not to change the version name in the environmental manual, but to review the environmental context, legal compliance obligations, significant environmental aspects and the factory's real operating data.

Factories that hold an ISO 14001:2015 certificate often ask the same questions when they hear a new version is out: do we have to redo the whole environmental dossier, can the old certificate still be used, will the certification body convert it for us? As with ISO 9001, the answer is nothing changes immediately, but preparation needs to start along the proper roadmap.

Short answer: ISO 14001:2026 was published by ISO on 15 April 2026, replacing ISO 14001:2015. Existing ISO 14001:2015 certificates do not lapse immediately; the factory has a transition period tied to the certification cycle (usually about 3 years), carried out at the coming surveillance or recertification audit. This article explains what has been updated, what to review, and the boundary between ISO 14001 and the mandatory environmental permit.

What is ISO 14001:2026 and how does it differ from the old version?

ISO 14001:2026 is the 4th edition of the standard for environmental management systems (EMS), published by ISO on 15 April 2026, building on nearly 30 years of application of the ISO 14001 framework. At the same time, ISO 14001:2015 was recorded as Withdrawn.

According to ISO’s official announcement, the 2026 version:

  • Keeps the environmental management system framework that has been widely trusted;
  • Has a clearer structure that is easier for readers and users to navigate;
  • Is more closely tied to current environmental priorities (climate change, resource use);
  • Is better suited for integration with the other ISO management standards already in the factory (ISO 9001, ISO 45001).

This is an update to make application easier on the basis of the old framework, not a completely different approach. A factory that already runs its environmental system well will not have to rewrite it from scratch, but still needs to review each part against how work is really done.

Transition period: tied to the certification cycle, not one rigid common deadline

Unlike ISO 9001:2026 (which has a detailed milestone table published by ISO/TC 176), ISO’s official FAQ for ISO 14001:2026 sets out a general principle: organizations certified to ISO 14001:2015 must transition within a period tied to the certification cycle, usually about 3 years, and should contact their certification body (CB) directly to learn the specific milestone for their contract.

In Vietnam, the Bureau of Accreditation (BoA) — the only national accreditation body, a full member of ILAC, IAF and APAC — has issued a common notice on the transition roadmap for both ISO 9001:2026 and ISO 14001:2026, applicable to certification bodies (22 September 2026). The milestone for each factory is still set by the certification body it has a contract with, so this is something to ask directly rather than infer from a single common figure.

One point to remember: ISO 14001 transition does not touch the environmental permit

ISO 14001 is a voluntary management system certification; the environmental permit is a mandatory administrative procedure for facilities within its scope, issued by a state authority under Law on Environmental Protection No. 72/2020/QH14 and Decree No. 08/2022/NĐ-CP (as amended). Transitioning to ISO 14001:2026 does not change the environmental permit obligation, and vice versa — the factory needs to track each dossier separately and not merge them into one task.

What a factory should review during the transition

The review should go into real operating data, not just change the version number on the cover of documents:

ItemWhat to review
Environmental contextCurrent emission sources (air, water, solid waste), the surrounding area, interested parties (local residents, customers, regulators)
Compliance obligationsEnvironmental permit, monitoring records, current legal obligations — check against the version currently in force, not an expired one
Significant environmental aspectsWhich stage generates the largest impact; whether anything has changed since the last assessment (technology change, capacity increase)
Environmental objectives and targetsWhether they are measurable, whether there is year-by-year tracking data, or only vague general objectives
Operational controlWhether work instructions in each area match how work is actually done
Environmental emergency responseWhether drills are held and whether they are updated for the most recent real situations

Common misunderstandings

  • Thinking the 2015 certificate expires immediately on 15 April 2026. This is the date ISO 14001:2015 was withdrawn at the international standard level, not the date the factory’s certificate expires. The certificate remains valid during the transition period tied to the cycle signed with the certification body.
  • Only changing the version number in the environmental manual without updating operating data. During a transition audit, the audit team still reads real data (emission sources, capacity, monitoring results) — documents that do not match reality will be pointed out immediately.
  • Thinking that having ISO 14001:2026 means the environmental obligations under Vietnamese law are settled. ISO 14001 does not replace the environmental permit; the factory still needs its own legal dossier under Decree No. 08/2022/NĐ-CP and its amendments.
  • Not updating ISO records after increasing capacity or changing technology. This is the time to review the legal dossier and the ISO dossier together, so that the two sets of records do not drift apart.

How Thái Tín supports you

Thái Tín receives information on the factory’s existing ISO 14001 certificate (if any), the status of its environmental dossier and its nearest surveillance or recertification schedule, and helps the factory identify the right time to put the transition to ISO 14001:2026 into its plan, while cross-checking against the environmental permit obligations it already holds. The assessment and the decision on transition are made by the certification body; the appraisal and issuance of the environmental permit are decided by the state authority. Thái Tín acts as the coordinating point, connecting a suitable consulting unit when needed. If your factory holds an ISO 14001:2015 certificate and is unsure which cycle to transition in, send the issue date of the current certificate, the name of the certification body and the status of your environmental dossier to get help identifying the right milestone.

Questions and answers

Does a factory's ISO 14001:2015 certificate lose validity immediately when ISO 14001:2026 is published?

No. ISO 14001:2015 was recorded as Withdrawn when ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026, but this is a change at the standard level. A certificate already issued to the factory remains valid during the transition period tied to the certification cycle agreed with the certification body, usually about 3 years according to ISO's official announcement.

How does ISO 14001:2026 differ from ISO 14001:2015?

According to ISO's announcement, the 2026 version (the 4th edition, building on nearly 30 years of application of ISO 14001) keeps the trusted environmental management system framework, with a clearer structure, easier navigation and a closer link to current environmental priorities. It is an adjustment to make the standard easier to apply and easier to integrate with other ISO management standards, not a complete change of approach.

If a factory has ISO 14001:2026, does it still need a Vietnamese environmental permit?

Yes, if the facility is subject to the environmental permit requirement under Law on Environmental Protection No. 72/2020/QH14 and Decree No. 08/2022/NĐ-CP. ISO 14001 is a voluntary environmental management system certification issued by a certification body; the environmental permit is a mandatory administrative procedure issued by a state authority. The two are independent and do not replace each other.

Where can a factory in Vietnam find its specific transition schedule?

The Bureau of Accreditation (BoA) issued a notice on the transition roadmap for ISO 9001:2026 and ISO 14001:2026 to certification bodies in Vietnam (22 September 2026). The specific milestone for each factory is set by the certification body it has a contract with, usually tied to the nearest surveillance or recertification audit.

Does a factory that is expanding its capacity face any impact on the ISO 14001 transition?

Yes. During the transition, the audit team will look at real operating data — emission sources, capacity, current technology — not just read old documents. If the factory has increased capacity or changed technology without updating the corresponding environmental records and ISO records, it should review both at the same time, not just change the standard's version number on the certificate.
